Why can a paper investigate a hypothesis but cannot believe a hypothesis?（2026.03）

When writing up your research, academic journals do not like to read "this study decides" or "this paper believes"; however, phrases such as "this study investigates” and "this study shows” are acceptable. Why?
You write your formal research paper to present your hypothesis, methods, data, then your thoughts on the hypothesis based on evidence presented within the manuscript. This means your paper presents a record of your investigation, so verbs describing how this record is presented are acceptable: it is an analysis of: “this paper analyzes”; it is an investigation of: “our paper investigates”.
To describe the paper as “believing” or “deciding” a hypothesis suggests the paper has a personal opinion. Journals do not like such subjective language: it affects the seriousness of the manuscript to suggest a paper has its own beliefs and makes its own decisions. A paper presents evidence-based reasoning for a hypothesis, a human can then decide whether they believe the hypothesis, based on the paper clearly presenting the data. Whereas the validity of your hypothesis can be argued by humans, not the research papers themselves, the fact that your manuscript describes your hypothesis is indisputable. So, a research paper can be associated with verbs which describe the facts that occur within it.
